Rejection

2021-08-05

didn't realize that some BNs regularly reject 40 maps in a row lol

I've traditionally accepted (or tried to accept) every map so I'm not used to reject culture (I assume it can be seen as a necessity, although I also wonder if people familiar with reject culture reject others since that's what they're familiar with)

possibly related is https://www.amazon.com/Power-No-Because-Abundance-Happiness/dp/1401945872 which I read a long time ago but don't remember anything in it (didn't use anki at the time)

I assume part of the reason I accept everything could be because I don't deal with rejections often (I know some people spend "months" applying to "hundreds of jobs" although these stories sound crazy to me)

as always it's easier if you know someone personally that can help you out (for jobs IRL, nominations on osu, and anything really)

anyway the reason I mentioned this is because cheri mentioned getting rejected IRL while rejecting maps, so I'm wondering if there's a correlation between rejecting more often if you've had that done to you

of course, a BN that rejects maps may also be using their time efficiently, they may focus on pushing the best of the best, or they may simply be more interested in certain songs/mappers/mapping styles

I'm thinking one key component I'm missing is how long it takes from when you first check a map as BN to when it reaches the ranked section

as I said some time ago most BNs don't mod maps since the host or other BNs assume that the BN is interested in nominating

as a BN I'd be less willing to spend my time modding maps that need work when I could just mod stuff I wanna push

now for the other part about how long it takes from 1st check to ranked section

the process of pushing a map involves checking all diffs / metadata / audio / etc, telling the mapper about the issues, waiting for the mapper to apply those changes, re-check, wait for another bn, etc

with such a long process I assume most BNs would rather pick maps they like the most to go through that process (even if other maps would be perfectly rankable, "another BN can nominate it instead")

now this is all on the BN side of things, I haven't even talked about mapping yet lol

there's a big disconnect between BNs and mappers since I believe mappers focus more on their work and BNs focus more on finding works they like, versus studying it more intensely like a mapper would do

of course some BNs are also mappers, which seems like a lot of work and could explain why those BNs prefer to keep the workload to a minimum (so they have more time mapping and doing other stuff)
