Here are all of my mentorship discussions, starting from 2019. Note that these discussions are informal in nature. If you are interested in becoming a mentee, read my mentoring page. If you want a more streamlined learning process, check out my guides.
anyway the gist is 10,000 hours of extensive focus in one area is how long it takes to become very good at that thing (some areas take longer, some take less, etc)
the person that gave the advice wish they divided their 10,000 hours up among multiple fields instead of putting in multiple 10,000 hours into one field
I believe that part of the reason you should divide your 10,000 hours up into multiple fields is because you get to experience the initial creativity of being unknowledgeable in that field
being able to experience this multiple times is what I believe drives the ability for creative individuals to relate multiple subjects together and produce innovative work (whether in art, science, or something else entirely)
part of the reason why (some) new mappers interest me so much could be because they experiment with unusual ideas
then over time those mappers either a) stop doing that and conform to what everyone else is doing or b) end up developing a unique way or ways of mapping
was looking at one of scub's old maps and it definitely feels less expressive than newer ones (talking about mapping-wise, although a lot of effort was put into keysounding)
basically from a mapping pov I believe there are thousands of maps more expressive than this but its unique trait is the keysounds (haven't checked the other diffs)
well top doesn't seem expressive either so I guess this is a consistency set
I'm sure players still enjoy this map and find it fun I just believe it's a map made as a level instead of a map made for the song
in other words I feel like I've seen the same maps in different songs before
didn't realize that some BNs regularly reject 40 maps in a row lol
I've traditionally accepted (or tried to accept) every map so I'm not used to reject culture (I assume it can be seen as a necessity, although I also wonder if people familiar with reject culture reject others since that's what they're familiar with)
I assume part of the reason I accept everything could be because I don't deal with rejections often (I know some people spend "months" applying to "hundreds of jobs" although these stories sound crazy to me)
as always it's easier if you know someone personally that can help you out (for jobs IRL, nominations on osu, and anything really)
anyway the reason I mentioned this is because cheri mentioned getting rejected IRL while rejecting maps, so I'm wondering if there's a correlation between rejecting more often if you've had that done to you
of course, a BN that rejects maps may also be using their time efficiently, they may focus on pushing the best of the best, or they may simply be more interested in certain songs/mappers/mapping styles
I'm thinking one key component I'm missing is how long it takes from when you first check a map as BN to when it reaches the ranked section
as I said some time ago most BNs don't mod maps since the host or other BNs assume that the BN is interested in nominating
as a BN I'd be less willing to spend my time modding maps that need work when I could just mod stuff I wanna push
now for the other part about how long it takes from 1st check to ranked section
the process of pushing a map involves checking all diffs / metadata / audio / etc, telling the mapper about the issues, waiting for the mapper to apply those changes, re-check, wait for another bn, etc
with such a long process I assume most BNs would rather pick maps they like the most to go through that process (even if other maps would be perfectly rankable, "another BN can nominate it instead")
now this is all on the BN side of things, I haven't even talked about mapping yet lol
there's a big disconnect between BNs and mappers since I believe mappers focus more on their work and BNs focus more on finding works they like, versus studying it more intensely like a mapper would do
of course some BNs are also mappers, which seems like a lot of work and could explain why those BNs prefer to keep the workload to a minimum (so they have more time mapping and doing other stuff)
just downloaded all the other versions of this song and they're all generic anime mapping except andrea's map which is andrea mapping
the difference in mapping prowess is insane
of course maybe these mappers just like mapping like the way they map but from a mapping POV their maps are simple compared to fisky's
but yea looking at the ranked sets was pretty funny since I never see those kinds of maps in contest mapping
an artist might say "all works aren't supposed to make you go wow" or that "there needs to be normal stuff for the irregularities to stand out"
I think it's hard to judge how much normal stuff there needs to be for irregularities to stand out since osu! maps create experiences (with the audio, background, visuals and feel of the map)
basically there are more variables involved than an artwork since multiple senses (hearing, seeing, haptic, etc) make up the beatmap experience
personally see what the mapper was trying to do but would never play this map for fun since I prefer maps that have defining unique moments in them more than maps that focus on how fast u can move ur cursor
from a mapping pov I don't think this map is as advanced as 2021 maps either
based on the leaderboards looks like I'm never fcing this haha
